Chapter Nineteen: Elena

Sophia was already at her desk when I arrived. “Good morning, Sophia” I said. “How was your evening?”

She looked up at me. “It was fine, Ms. James. Relaxing.” She gave me a curious look, and then a mischievous smile spread across her face. “What about yours?”

Did I have something on my face? “What’s that grin about?” I asked.

“Oh, no reason, except that you’re glowing. Did something happen between you and Mr. Stone?”

“Why on earth would you think that?” I asked.

Damon had just stepped into the room behind me. I heard him stifle a laugh before he returned to his standard impassive expression.

“Oh, no reason,” Sophia said. “I’ll just talk to Mr. Stone later.”

I sighed. “Can you come into my office? I’ve got some papers that need to go out.”

“Of course, Ms. James.”

I shot a look at Damon, who only made a lewd gesture in my direction when Sophia wasn’t looking. I scowled, which made him laugh.

When Sophia closed the door behind her, I turned and looked at her. “You’re too observant for your own good, you know that?”

“I am?”

“Yes, you are.” I blushed: I could feel it spreading over my cheeks. “What do you think of Damon? I mean, Mr. Stone?”

“Speaking professionally, he’s a fine bodyguard who takes his duties seriously. On a totally unprofessional level, and you’ll have to forgive me…hot damn, that’s a fine man.”

I blinked, a bit stunned at her bluntness, and then burst into laughter. “I agree, on both counts,” I said. “And when we’re together like this, just call me Elena. We’ve worked together long enough, and I really dislike formality.”

Sophia’s face lit up. “Of course!” She sat down in the chair across from my desk. “So what happened? Don’t try to tell me nothing happened. I can see something clearly did.”

I laughed and leaned back. It felt good to have a bit of girl talk; it had been a long time. “We slept together,” I said. I didn’t tell her about the events leading up to that; Sophia had no idea about the people around my home or those threatening me on the street. I didn’t know if that would put her in harm’s way, so I kept certain issues compartmentalized. “It was…it was really great,” I said.

“Ms. Ja-Elena, if you don’t mind my asking, how long have you known Mr. Stone? You two don’t seem like people who just recently met.”

“We were friends as children,” I said. “Well, teenagers, really. Before he walked through those doors to interview, I hadn’t seen him in eight years.”

“Wow. That’s a long time to go without contact.”

“There were…extenuating circumstances,” I said. “I’d like to keep this between us. I don’t know what the company policy is on this particular situation, and I have enough to worry about without pissing off HR in some way or another.”

“Don’t worry. I won’t say a word to anyone. Just let me know if Mr. Stone has any single, unattached friends that are attracted to perky receptionists!”

I laughed. “I’ll keep that in mind.
